Your Brooklyn plumber, Aladdin Plumbing, wants you to keep your plumbing in tip-top shape this winter. Since 1976, we have been helping Brooklyn residents keep their plumbing systems in perfect working order. To help us accomplish that, you should follow these simple frozen pipe prevention, garbage disposal guideline, and toilet waste tips.
Start with your outside valves, we suggest you turn off the valve that leads to your garden hose. This prevents water from entering via the garden hose and freezing, causing your pipes to burst and leak. When it is below freezing, you should have water dripping in your faucet such as a bathroom or kitchen (or both) sink. This will help keep pipes that may be near an outside wall from getting clogged with ice.
In the kitchen, only put items in the garbage disposal that belong in the garbage disposal. Put things that belong in the trash, in the trash and away from your drain. Pulp from fruit and vegetables is okay and waste from veggies and fruits, but it is not okay to put fat or grease down your garbage disposal. Putting fat or grease down a drain are some of the top reasons for it to develop a clog. It is also not okay to put animal bones down your disposal unless specified.
If you have a disposal, you should consider running it for a few seconds before disposing of items. You can also run it for a few seconds after you dispose of waste to make sure they properly flush down the pipe system and don’t get clogged. A clogged pipe is not something you want – especially in the winter when cold temperatures can already wreak havoc on your pipes.
Finally, to keep your plumbing safe, you should not dispose of tampons or other feminine products down your toilet. Make sure you only use the toilet for human waste and toilet paper. Your toilet is not a trash can and cannot handle bigger items.
